Chapter Thirty-Six

“Goddess of Darkness and Magic,” I began. “Help us to find what we seek.” I spit into the bowl with Mom’s hair and then cut my palm with an athame. Ember gasped, but I ignored her. I let the blood pool for a moment before dripping it into the bowl. “May the Goddess bless this task. We seek the one who has taken something precious from us. May he emerge from the darkness and stand judgment.”

I leaned forward and spat in the bowl again, then took the whole mess in my hand and rolled it into a ball. I ignored the sting from the cut as it squelched and spread blood all over my hands. I was concentrating too hard to care. Rolling the ball tighter and tighter until I felt a slight fizzy sensation from it, a gentle breeze blew at my hair, tickling my neck. My pulse picked up like a drum. It was working. Excited, I paused, took a deep breath and with my hands cupped together around the ball I’d rolled, I brought it to my face. Blew out all my breath through a small gap between my wrists.

When I felt the strong fluttering, my stomach flipped in excitement. I opened my hands and a large death head moth flew out, hovering above my head. I’d done it.

“Holy hellfire in Hades,” Ember gasped.

I grinned at her, standing up and opening a window so the curse could go do its job. I didn’t know how long it would take, but we’d have to be ready. The moth landed on my hand for a moment, then fluttered right outside and disappeared. If a bird ate it, the curse would possess its new host and continue on its quest.

I turned around. “We have to be ready.”

Winter, the ever supportive sister, nodded approvingly.

“Ready for what?” said Ember.

“Ready for anything. I don’t know what to expect as a response.”

“Damn it, Silver, what if he shows up at our door to take us next?”

“Good. Then we’ll have him,” I said.

She groaned.

“Ember, it’s probably not going to work like that,” said Winter. “He’ll probably get hit with a wave of guilt and turn himself in.”

“It's anybody’s guess. I don’t like it, Silver, considering you’re supposed to die—when? Tonight? Tomorrow?”

“Yeah, something like that, but I’m on the schedule at the club now. I’ll be smart, don’t worry.”

Ember sat in the chair with her arms crossed, one leg over the other, waving her foot up and down. Her ‘thinking hard’ pose. Winter watched us quietly.

“Don’t hurt yourself,” I said.

She raised her eyebrows. Our whole life, every time she gave me that look, I wondered what it meant. It was expectant, a little pushy.

“What?” I snapped.

“What are you going to do if you get kidnapped? You still can’t glamour radiants, can you?” She knew I couldn’t. Her eyes flashed with anger. “You need more protection than that!”

“What do you have in mind, Ember?”

With a smug grin, she picked up the grimoire, stood up and crossed the room to me.
